Tutti Frutti’s lessons are total immersion. The teacher can only speak the target language. Translation is not allowed. He/ she tries to make himself understood in 1001 different ways: visual support, facial expressions, body language… It isn’t that he doesn’t want to communicate. Above all, he wants to maintain a linguistic coherence.

When parents come to pick up their children, we ask them to help the teacher to also observe this linguistic coherence, and therefore avoid speaking French in front of the children.

Yes and no.

A familiar face in strange territory is certainly comforting. There’s strength in numbers!

Sometimes, friends together in class might form a bubble and then not be open to what is going on around them. Their families know their children best. Ask yourselves these questions: Despite being together, will they still pay attention or would they carry on together like a house on fire? Has another teacher (at Tutti Frutti or elsewhere) already had difficulty with the pair?

That being said, the teacher still makes sure each child, whether alone or with friends, is integrated into the group.

And lastly, as our groups are small (between five to twelve children), children get to know their classmates quickly.

Furthermore, some children are perfectionists (from early on). They would rather say nothing at all than make a mistake. Of course, we try to encourage them and reassure them—they can express their thoughts even if it’s by stumbling through them.

Let us not forget that a child who does not speak is not a child who is not learning. This child needs to observe, and integrate the new language in a different way. Even through this way, the brain is active.

Finally, we do give lesson summaries to the parents. They are welcome to sit back and go through them to repeat what was done in class.

A lifetime!

And then… as previously mentioned, how long it takes to learn something depends on the rhythm of each child, on the exposure to the other language, the learner’s motivation, the “closeness” between the mother tongue and the language to be learned, and finally, your own objectives. Is it just to get the child used to the language? Is it so he can get on well on holiday? Will the child be schooled in the target language? Our language classes give priority to the spoken language. We do not offer intensive courses. In any case, we are against it: the brain needs time to ripen and take on in his own time what is good for him at that point in time.

In general, this lesson goes with him throughout his school career. It’s why a child can need either three or ten years!

It’s always worth introducing a new language (even slowly) and getting a child used to it. This familiarisation is one of the indispensable first steps in the learning process. The child gets exposed to sounds, we maintain the auditory flexibility found in children and we expand the auditory spectrum to learn to understand the target language.

Through the language classes, we also awaken the children’s curiosity in general and their thoughts on language (a metalinguistic awareness). This opens a new world to them.

The presence of other children allow for repetition without it becoming boring. Revision is always beneficial. Naturally, this kind of revision still needs to motivate the child and hold his interest (which is why we choose to operate with activities).

A child feels better about himself when he knows a bit more than the others. Self-confidence and pride is primordial in the entire learning process.

And finally, the teacher is speaking the target language. Each child, in function of his age and maturity and personal interest is going to take from this whatever is good for him or her. Small groups also allow us to personalise the approach. For instance, beginners in the class might be asked to repeat key words, intermediate-level children can be asked to start putting word combinations together and advanced children can be asked to put together longer sentences.

At a conference on stuttering at Marie Haps Institute:

Forty years ago, some teachers excluded children from English or Dutch lessons if they had a stutter. I was moved to hear the experience of one woman who suffered this injustice even now, decades after her education. Exclusion leaves its mark.
